Rabbit Health and Common Diseases
A rabbit’s health is closely connected to proper housing, nutrition, and regular care. Rabbits are sensitive animals and often hide signs of illness for a long time. Because of this, it is important for owners to recognize the basic signs of both a healthy and an unhealthy rabbit.
Signs of a Healthy Rabbit:
A healthy rabbit is active, alert, and has a good appetite.
Common signs of good health:
shiny, thick fur
clean eyes with no discharge
dry nose
regular droppings (firm, round pellets)
healthy appetite
normal movement and behavior
Common Rabbit Health Problems
Digestive Problems
Digestive issues are among the most common health problems in rabbits.
Symptoms may include:
diarrhea or constipation
bloating
loss of appetite
The most common causes are an improper diet or sudden changes in food.
Gastrointestinal stasis (GI stasis) is a serious condition in rabbits and requires immediate veterinary attention.
Dental Problems
Rabbit teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, so they must naturally wear them down through chewing.
Common dental issues:
overgrown teeth
difficulty eating
drooling
The best prevention is providing unlimited access to hay.
Parasites
Rabbits can suffer from both internal and external parasites.
Common parasites:
mites (mange)
fleas
intestinal parasites
Symptoms may include itching, weight loss, or poor coat condition.
Infectious Diseases
Some rabbit diseases are extremely dangerous and can be fatal.
Myxomatosis
A viral disease spread mainly by insects such as mosquitoes and fleas. It can cause swelling, eye inflammation, and severe illness.
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD/RHDV)
A highly contagious viral disease that may cause sudden death and has a very high mortality rate.
Vaccination and protection from insects are important preventive measures.
When to Visit a Veterinarian
You should contact a veterinarian immediately if your rabbit shows any of the following signs:
refusing food
lethargy or unusual stillness
diarrhea or changes in droppings
discharge from the eyes or nose
breathing problems
Early treatment is extremely important because a rabbit’s condition can worsen very quickly.
Prevention and Proper Care
The best way to prevent illness is through proper daily care.
Important preventive steps:
provide a balanced, high-quality diet
allow plenty of exercise
maintain a clean living environment
check your rabbit regularly for signs of illness
keep vaccinations up to date
Regular veterinary checkups can also help detect health problems early.
