Hamster Food and Nutrition
Commercial Hamster Food Mixes
Commercial hamster food mixes usually contain a variety of grains and are typically designed for Syrian hamsters.
For dwarf hamsters, these mixes may not always be ideal because some grains are too large for them. However, they can still safely eat them and will usually pick out what they like best. Sunflower seeds are especially popular among hamsters.
Homemade Hamster Food Mix
You can also prepare your own hamster food mix at home based on your hamster’s preferences. The basic ingredients can stay the same, but you can adjust the proportions as needed.
Possible ingredients:
corn flakes
peanuts
walnuts and hazelnuts
rolled oats
millet
corn
sunflower seeds
animal protein (such as dried dog food or mealworms)
dried peas
budgie seed mix
sesame seeds
Hard Foods for Hamsters
If a hamster only eats soft food, its front teeth can continue growing and eventually cause eating problems.
That’s why it’s important to provide hard foods they can chew on regularly.
Suitable options include:
dry bread
hard bread rolls
dog chew sticks
Fresh Greens and Vegetables
In addition to dry food, hamsters should regularly receive fresh foods as part of a balanced diet.
Not all fruits and vegetables are suitable, but there are still many safe options to choose from. Some can even be grown at home on a balcony or in a garden.
Important: Do not collect wild greens near roads, as they may be contaminated by car exhaust and pollutants.
Safe fruits and vegetables:
banana
apple
pear
strawberries
carrot
cucumber
bell pepper
corn
lettuce
Natural treats and greens:
Dwarf hamsters especially enjoy:
carrot tops (in small amounts)
kohlrabi and cauliflower leaves
branches from fruit trees, willow, birch, or walnut trees
dandelion and clover leaves
buds and bark
They also enjoy:
apple blossoms
dandelions
dandelion roots
Treats for Hamsters
You can occasionally offer your hamster a few extra treats, such as:
cooked pasta
oatmeal
cottage cheese or plain yogurt
dog food
live insects (crickets or grasshoppers)
grass with roots
moss
Hydration
Hamsters only need access to fresh, clean water.
Important Feeding Rules for Hamsters
Always feed small portions
Introduce new foods gradually
Remove leftover fresh food from the cage before it spoils
Foods Hamsters Should Avoid

citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, grapefruit)
green parts of tomatoes
avocado — toxic
very sugary fruits (grapes, mango, pineapple)
❌ Vegetables
potato sprouts — toxic or dangerous
raw potatoes
onion, garlic, and leeks — potentially toxic
eggplant
cabbage and kale — may cause bloating and digestive problems
❌ Other Unsafe Foods
sweets and sugary foods (chocolate, candy, cookies) — toxic and may increase the risk of diabetes
salty or heavily seasoned foods (chips, pretzels) — hard on a hamster’s body
large amounts of dairy products (milk, cream, cheese) — hamsters do not digest lactose well
small amounts of yogurt or cottage cheese are usually fine occasionally
salami, sausage, and ham — contain too much salt, fat, and preservatives
sticky foods (fresh bread dough or sticky pastries) — can get stuck in cheek pouches and spoil
salted nuts
houseplants — many are toxic and can be deadly for hamsters
