Guinea Pig Health and Common Illnesses

Guinea pigs are popular pets, but keeping them healthy requires regular care and attention. Many illnesses develop gradually and can become serious if not treated early. That’s why it’s important to recognize the most common health problems and their symptoms.

Dental Problems (Overgrown Teeth)

A guinea pig’s teeth grow continuously throughout its life. If the animal does not have enough hay or safe chewing materials to wear the teeth down naturally, the teeth may become overgrown.

Common symptoms:

  • loss of appetite

  • drooling

  • weight loss

  • difficulty eating

Treatment usually involves a veterinarian trimming the teeth and adjusting the guinea pig’s diet.

Bloat and Gas

Bloating is a very dangerous condition that can become life-threatening for guinea pigs. It is often caused by unsuitable foods or wet grass and vegetables.

Symptoms include:

  • swollen or hard stomach

  • lethargy

  • loss of appetite

This is an emergency situation and requires immediate veterinary care.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea may be caused by an improper diet, stress, or infection.

Common signs:

  • loose or watery stool

  • dirty fur around the rear end

  • weakness

It is important to keep the guinea pig hydrated and contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Respiratory Infections

Respiratory illnesses are often caused by drafts, cold temperatures, or bacterial infections.

Symptoms may include:

  • sneezing

  • nasal discharge

  • difficulty breathing

  • lethargy

If left untreated, respiratory infections can lead to pneumonia. Treatment typically includes antibiotics and improving the guinea pig’s living environment.

Parasites

Guinea pigs can suffer from parasites such as mites, lice, and intestinal parasites.

Symptoms may include:

  • itching

  • hair loss

  • excessive scratching

  • weight loss

Treatment depends on the type of parasite and should be provided by a veterinarian.

Vitamin C Deficiency (Scurvy)

Guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C on their own, so they must get it from their diet.

A lack of vitamin C may cause:

  • weakness

  • joint pain

  • bleeding gums

  • poor overall health

Prevention includes feeding fresh vegetables and high-quality guinea pig food rich in vitamin C.

Eye Infections

Eye infections may appear as:

  • redness

  • discharge

  • squinting or keeping the eye closed

They can be caused by dust, injury, or infection. Treatment usually involves medicated eye drops and removing the source of irritation.

Bladder Stones

Bladder stones are a fairly common problem in guinea pigs.

Symptoms include:

  • pain while urinating

  • blood in the urine

  • frequent urination

In severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Prevention includes a proper diet and plenty of fresh water.

Skin Conditions and Fungal Infections

Fungal infections and other skin conditions can cause:

  • hair loss

  • flaky skin

  • itching

Some fungal infections can spread to humans. Treatment usually involves antifungal medication and careful cleaning of the guinea pig’s environment.

Heatstroke and Overheating

Guinea pigs do not tolerate high temperatures well.

Signs of overheating include:

  • lethargy

  • rapid breathing

  • weakness

In severe cases, overheating can be fatal. Prevention includes keeping guinea pigs in a cool environment with plenty of shade and fresh water.
