Dog Health and Common Diseases

A dog’s health is the foundation of a long and happy life. Prevention, proper care, and recognizing symptoms early can make a huge difference in your dog’s overall well-being. Dogs can suffer from many different illnesses, ranging from parasites to serious infectious diseases.

Parasitic Diseases

Parasites are among the most common health problems in dogs. They can cause itching, skin irritation, digestive issues, and even more serious complications.

Fleas, Lice, and Biting Lice

These external parasites can make dogs extremely uncomfortable. They often cause intense itching, irritated skin, and rashes. Severe infestations may also trigger allergic reactions.

An interesting fact is that if a dog swallows an infected flea, it can develop a tapeworm infection in its digestive tract. Parasites also spread easily between dogs through close contact.

Ticks

Ticks are very common, especially during warmer months (typically from spring through fall). Dogs often pick them up during walks in wooded areas, parks, or tall grass.

Besides feeding on blood, ticks can transmit dangerous diseases. Heavy infestations may weaken a dog’s immune system and overall health.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms are internal parasites. Infected dogs may lose weight, develop dull or rough coats, and experience digestive problems such as alternating diarrhea and constipation.

Other common symptoms include itching around the rear end, skin irritation, and in some cases even nervous system-related symptoms.

Mange

Mange is a skin disease caused by mites. It leads to severe itching, redness, hair loss, and irritated skin.

Affected areas may develop crusts or scabs, and fluid may leak from damaged skin before drying out. Mange can become very uncomfortable and requires veterinary treatment.

Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases can be very serious, and some may even be fatal. That’s why prevention through vaccination is extremely important.

Rabies

Rabies is a very dangerous viral disease that affects all warm-blooded animals, including humans. It spreads mainly through the saliva of infected animals.

In the early stages, dogs may show behavioral changes such as restlessness, aggression, or unusual fearfulness. As the disease progresses, swallowing problems, excessive drooling, and neurological symptoms may appear.

Eventually, rabies leads to paralysis and death. Rabies is always fatal once symptoms develop, which is why regular vaccination is legally required in many places.

Infectious Hepatitis

This disease usually enters the body through the digestive system and can progress very quickly.

Common symptoms include:

  • High fever

  • Eye inflammation

  • Respiratory inflammation

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea (especially in puppies)

In some cases, temporary cloudiness of the cornea (“blue eye”) may also occur.

Canine Distemper

Distemper is one of the best-known viral diseases in dogs. It most commonly affects puppies, but adult dogs can become infected as well.

The disease spreads through contact with infected dogs, including nasal discharge, eye discharge, urine, or feces.

Symptoms vary depending on the form of the disease:

Respiratory Form:

  • Coughing

  • Nasal discharge

  • Respiratory infections

Digestive Form:

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Loss of appetite

Eye Form:

  • Eye inflammation

  • Pus-like eye discharge

Nervous System Form:

  • Tremors

  • Seizures

  • Coordination and movement problems

Distemper is a serious disease that can leave permanent damage or even be fatal.

Preventing Health Problems in Dogs

The best protection against disease is prevention:

  • Regular vaccinations

  • Deworming and parasite prevention

  • High-quality balanced nutrition

  • Enough exercise

  • Routine veterinary checkups

It’s also important to monitor your dog’s behavior. If you notice changes such as loss of appetite, lethargy, itching, vomiting, or unusual behavior, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
