Cleaning a Hamster Cage
Cleaning a hamster cage does not mean completely emptying and scrubbing it every single day. It’s more about doing small regular cleanups and occasional deep cleanings.
Here’s a simple cleaning schedule recommended by many hamster owners and veterinarians:
Every Day (Quick Cleaning — 2 to 5 Minutes)
Check the cage and remove:
uneaten fresh food
visibly dirty areas
wet or soiled bedding (especially in corners or bathroom areas)
This helps reduce odors and prevents bacteria buildup.
Once a Week (Partial Cleaning — 15 to 20 Minutes)
replace about 25–50% of the bedding
wipe down dirty surfaces
wash the food bowl and water bottle
Do not replace all the bedding at once. Hamsters rely heavily on familiar scents, and removing everything can cause stress and anxiety.
Every 3 Weeks (Deep Cleaning)
remove all bedding
wash the cage with warm water
(use a pet-safe cleaner if needed)clean all accessories
(wheel, hideouts, toys, food dishes)add fresh bedding
This deeper cleaning helps keep the habitat hygienic and healthy.

Important Tips
Don’t clean the cage too often — it can stress your hamster.
Don’t clean it too rarely either — this can lead to odors and health risks.
Always leave a small amount of old bedding in the cage so your hamster can still recognize its familiar scent.
